Brooke Durham

Brooke Durham is a PhD candidate in the History Department at Stanford University. Her research interests include North and West African history and French history. Brooke’s dissertation focuses on local and non-governmental organizations during decolonization in 1950s and 1960s Algeria, in which Europeans and Algerians worked together to solve pressing social problems, such as expanding access to French-language primary education and improving French literacy rates among the Algerian population. Brooke’s work contributes to Algerian social history and the history of decolonization in North Africa, and underscores the interpersonal and organizational tensions in transcending binaries of race, religion and colonial status.
