Alix Ziff

Born and raised in Manhattan Beach, California, Alix attended several universities, played NCAA volleyball at UC Santa Cruz, assisted in research on economic development at UCLA, studied abroad at the University of Cape Town, and graduated from UC San Diego. At UCSD she earned her B.A. in Political Science and International Relations with a minor in African Studies. During her time at UCSD, she researched public access to education in South Sudan: analyzing the roles of colonialism, political contention, and ethnic divisions in the provision of education.

At Stanford, Alix is eager to continue her studies on social and political obstacles to development. She is interested in the lasting effects of colonialism on African governance and development, political contention in ethnically diverse African states, and the role of international institutions and law in the protection of the human rights of refugees and IDPs within and from Africa.

Alix’s initial interest in African studies resulted from her love of African historical fiction.
