Student-Led Writing Group Builds Community for Africanist Scholars

By bolu Owoeye, Center for African Studies.

The Interdisciplinary Humanities Africanist Writing Group, known as IHAWG, fosters a supportive intellectual community for students conducting Africa-focused research across the humanities.

Founded as a student-led initiative, the group brings together emerging Africanist scholars for weekly co-writing sessions, writing workshops, and an engaging speaker series. Through these gatherings, students have space to share works in progress, exchange feedback, and build connections across disciplines.

Stanford CAS IHAWG members also meet virtually with students from UC Berkeley’s Center for African Studies during select meetings, expanding the group’s community beyond Stanford and creating opportunities for cross-campus scholarly exchange.

IHAWG meets based on a consensus of students' availability. Students interested in joining or learning more can contact them using this link.
