Part 1: Maintaining Collaboration in Uncertain Times: A 5-step Process
- BIO: Dr. Temesgen Abicho is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Consultant Emergency and Critical Care Specialist at Addis Ababa University College of Health Sciences/Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital in Ethiopia. Dr. Abicho is a public health enthusiast, Visiting Instructor in the Stanford Department of Emergency Medicine, Stanford African Scholar in Global Health and PhD student in Health Quality at Queens University in Canada. He completed fellowship training on quality improvement and patient safety from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and was previously the chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Addis Ababa University.
- SESSION DESCRIPTION: COVID-19 presented many challenges for global health collaboration. In this talk, Dr. Abicho will share insights about how to successfully continue partnership during uncertain times, using his experience finding context-specific solutions to sustain academic collaboration between Addis Ababa University and the University of Toronto as a case study.
Part 2: Research Collaboration: Opportunities and Challenges
- BIO: Dr. Alemayehu Teklu Toni is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Child Health at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital in Ethiopia. Dr. Toni is a senior clinician, medical educator, and researcher with a focus on immunization, vaccine-preventable diseases, and childhood malnutrition in low-resource settings. He has participated in over ten international collaborative research projects and is currently a Visiting Instructor in the Stanford Department of Pediatrics, Stanford African Scholar in Global Health, and PhD student at Wageningen University.
- SESSION DESCRIPTION: In this talk, Dr. Toni will explore lessons learned from global health research collaborations established and maintained during the COVID-19 pandemic, including opportunities and challenges encountered, with key strategies used to overcome them.
