Africa Table - Exploring Ubuntu Through Global Service Learning in Zambia

Speaker: Lilian Dube, Associate Professor, Theology & Religious Studies Department, University of San Francisco

Dr. Dube will discuss her use of service-learning research methodology to explore health and wellbeing of mineworkers, communities, and environmental stewardship in the Copperbelt Province of Zambia.

Lilian Dube is an Associate Professor in the Theology and Religious Studies Department at the University of San Francisco. In 1999, she made history as the first Black woman to earn a DTh from Stellenbosch University, founded in 1866. She is the executive producer of the film, USF in Zambia: HIV/AIDS and Social Justice, 2012, the co-author of African Initiatives in Healing Ministry, UNISA 2011, the co-editor of Theology in the Context of Globalization: African Women's Response, EATWOT Women's Commission 2005 and has published numerous journal articles & book chapters. Lilian received the Jesuit Foundation Pedagogy Grant for the production of a film on HIV/AIDS in Zambia, the prestigious American Association of University Women Fellowship, the Dorothy Cadbury Fellowship, and Doctoral Fellowships from the World Council of Churches and the Methodist Church Global Ministry Women Division.

In 2006, she joined the University of San Francisco where she teaches courses in Feminist Theology from the Third World, African Theology, Religion, & Sexuality and Theology in HIV/AIDS Contexts. She developed a month-long Service-Learning program in Zambia that explores some key drivers of the AIDS Epidemic and has led the program since 2010. Internationally, she was tenured at the University of Zimbabwe and a visiting scholar at Birmingham University, UK. She was also a visiting professor at Northwestern University, and Columbia University in 2012. Lilian is a frequent guest-lecturer at Harvard Divinity School.
